EDWIGE
Singer, model, actress, artist and Paris and New-York night-life cult figure.
Edwige, just out of a convent-education, started as a cult figure of the nascent Parisian punk scene in 1976/1977, having her picture taken by Helmut Newton and gracing the cover of Façade magazine together with Andy Warhol under the headline "Pope of Pop meets Queen of Punk".
A model and muse for Jean Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler and Pierre et Gilles, Edwige founded the post-punk, synth-pop duo Mathématiques Modernes with Claude Arto, achieving NME's Single of the Week and built her fierce reputation managing the door at Le Palace night club.
After frequent trips to New-York since the late 70s, where she mingled with Warhol's, Studio 54 and the Downtown crowds, she moved there in 1981. Rumours had her dating Grace Jones and Sade Adu and inspiring the latter's Sade - The Sweetest Taboo. She worked at night-clubs Danceteria, together with Adu, Debi Mazar and Keith Haring, Area and the Palladium, running her own nights "Lazy Lounge" or "Beat Cocktail Lounge", then "Beige" at the Tunnel; also performing cabaret shows with Joey Arias. She later left the night-life scene and was in charge of Agnès B.'s gallery and retail space on Howard Street, NYC. She relocated to Miami, as artist in residence at the Vagabond Hotel.
Edwige passed away on the 22nd of September, 2015, aged 58.
